I recently went on a weekend jaunt to Palm Springs for my fabulous friend Kelli’s bday. Needless to say we baked in the sun poolside all day at the Riviera while sipping on “Maryann’s” (a refreshing concoction of Blueberry Vodka, Fresh Lemon Juice, Lemonade, and Blueberries...which the bday girl CLEARLY enjoyed)…and partied all night!
Palm Springs is always a sure thing for our yearly girls trip and while I knew it would be an insanely crazy weekend…I never would have guessed that I would find a local boutique café serving up one of the best breakfasts I've had to date!
Insert Cheeky’s. I had mentally noted this place after seeing so many great recommendations on Yelp but then our friend Cheryl brought it back to the forefront of my mind just before we left... making it numero uno on my personal to-do list for the weekend.
First off, they make every single dish on their revolving weekly menu sound uber enticing…Smoked Salmon Scramble with Dill, Chives and Herbed Cream Cheese; Custard Cheesy Scrambled Eggs, Maple Sage Sausage & Deb`s Cheddar Scone; Cornflake French Toast with Fresh Summer Berries.
Great menus are a double edged sword…I mean, how do you choose just one from such an appealing list?! The weekend we went, there was one menu item none of us could get out of our heads...Sourdough French Toast w/ Balsamic Strawberries...this is the kind of dish you know will be the envy of the table! I was in more of a savory kind of mood but just couldn't risk passing up something that sounded so delectable...and also a kind of peculiar. So we got two orders for the table!
Each bite tugs at your heart a little bit because you know that something this good can't last forever. The balsamic gave the strawberries an extra little zing that balanced out the sweet French Toast and the choice to use sourdough provided a sturdy base that didn't turn soggy under all of those strawberries. See those crinkly, caramelized toast edges in the picture?...for me, this was the best part! It was like eating my Grandma's buttery Pecan Candy (aka Praline for all of you non Southerners).
To quench my need for something savory I had to check out Cheeky's spin on one of my all time breakfast favorites...Eggs Benedict. Blondie's Eggs Benedict w/ Bacon, Sauteed Arugula, and Hollandaise on top of Deb's Cheddar Scone and served alongside the lightest, most fluffy Hash Browns I have tasted.
Typically, I'm beyond stuffed after eating Egg's Benedict but even though it may appear rich and heavy...Cheeky's version was surprisingly much lighter than most. I think the scone is key...I've seen a lot of people finish off the toppings of Egg's Benedict but leave the bread behind. Let's just say there is no way in hell you're leaving Deb's Cheddar Scone behind...it's way too good and the lack of density allows you to enjoy all of the Benedict's components without feeling gorged! I could have had two more!
...and then there was BACON! I don't know many people that could pass up a Bacon Flight if it were on the menu...and leave it to Cheeky's to take it one step further and blow your mind with their variety of slices: Apricot Glazed, Nodines Smokehouse, Jalapeno, Applewood, and Xtra Thick (plus what's another $4 added to the tab...it's an experience people!). The Apricot Glazed was the table favorite...for anyone that loves dipping your bacon in maple syrup, this would be heaven for you!
The only downside is the monster wait to get a table (2 hours!!!) Guess it can't be all sunshine and gumdrops when you're the toast of the town…good thing their sister bar (and pizzeria!) Birba next door had ample space and excellent bartenders!
Word on the street is that there are plans for expansion a bit closer to our neck of the woods in LA…cross your fingers for a Santa Monica Cheeky’s!!
